MasterY class WITH Alexa Still

The Greater Cleveland Flute Society is hosting Alexa Still for a recital and a mastery class!

Celebrated flutist Alexa Still is the Greater Cleveland Flute Society's special guest for this fall's recital and mastery class. Join us on Sunday, October 25, at The Music Settlement, 11125 Magnolia, Cleveland, at 1:00 p.m.

GCFS will sponsor a recorded competition for the opportunity to perform. Up to 4 performers will be chosen from the recorded auditions.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to any age flutist.

AUDITION PROCEDURES: A MP3 file or video recording shared via Google Drive to
greaterclevelandflutesociety@gmail.com, 5-10 minutes in length, along with a brief bio of the performer, must be received by 11:59 p.m. ET Wednesday, September 23. Compositions written for flute and piano must be performed with piano. The recording must not be spliced or edited. Please ensure that your submissions do not require permissions to view them.

Winners will be notified by Sunday, September 27.

ACCOMPANIST: Mastery class performers shall provide their own accompanist for October 25.

APPLICATION FEE: The application fee will be waived for 2026-2027 GCFS members. Non-members must enclose a check $20, payable to GCFS or via PayPal

About the Artist

Alexa Still is known internationally primarily through her 20+ recordings that have garnered

unanimous praise: “impeccable in technique and taste, seductive in phrasing” (Stephensen

Classical C D Guide). “Still plays... so convincingly I cannot separate her from the music”

(American Record Guide), “whatever she plays sounds musical in every turn of the phrase”

(Gramophone), “a stunning showcase for the astonishing Alexa Still” (Fanfare). “Still showcases

her exquisite lyricism and virtuosity on every track” Cleveland Classical.

Alexa got her doctorate in New York (SUNY Stony Brook), won competitions including the New York Flute Club Young Artist Competition, and, East and West Artists Competition and then at 23, returned home as principal flute of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Other awards include a Churchill

Fellowship, a Fulbright, and the American Prize for Instrumental Performance, 2024.

Alexa left the NZSO to devote more time to solo engagements and teaching at the University of

Colorado at Boulder, then the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (where she was also director of

Performance Research), and since 2011, the Oberlin Conservatory. Alexa has also performed as

soloist in 16 countries, including many world premieres. Alexa’s articles have been read around

the globe, and she has served her profession as President of the National Flute Association

Collaborative Pianist: Hyunsoo Kim

Hyunsoo Kim is an internationally active collaborative pianist whose performances have taken

him throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, China, and South Korea. He has appeared

alongside distinguished artists including Jaime Laredo, Sharon Robinson, Miriam Fried, Andrés

Cárdenes, Ettore Causa, Atar Arad, Dimitri Murrath, Jinjoo Cho, Julien Beaudiment, Mark

Sparks, Dina Kuznetsova, Chantal Mathias, members of the Cavani, Miami, and Verona String

Quartets, and musicians from the Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Boston

Symphony Orchestra.

A sought-after chamber musician, Kim recently presented a complete cycle of Beethoven’s ten

Sonatas for Viola and Piano with violist Eric Wong, featuring Wong’s transcriptions, at the 50th

International Viola Congress in Paris and in performances across the United States. His

appearances have taken him to leading venues including Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium,

Merkin Hall, the Chicago Cultural Center, Kumho Art Hall, and the Seoul Arts Center, the La

Jolla Music Society, Myra Hess Memorial Concerts, Chamber Music International–Dallas,

Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle, the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis

Laureate Series, Linton Chamber Music, the Brattleboro Music Center, and Rockport Music. An

active recording artist, he has collaborated with violinist Jinjoo Cho on recordings for Azica

Records and Sony Classical Korea.

Kim is Collaborative Artist at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Encore Chamber Music

Institute, where he also serves as Director of Admissions.
